  • Governers

Responsibility for the delivery of education governance sits within the mandate of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture. Deputies from this Committee carry ultimate political responsibility for the provision of effective governance arrangements for all States-maintained schools.

In September 2025 new education governance legislation was passed by the States of Deliberation. The legislation establishes individual governance boards for each education setting.

Governance boards make sure that organisations are well led, well run and are accountable so that taxpayers’ money is used efficiently and has the best impact. They do this by providing appropriate strategic direction for Headteachers/Principals, in alignment with the political vision for education set out by elected politicians, and by monitoring the performance of the organisation so that budgets and staffing resources are used effectively, that strategic or operational risks are managed well and that the culture and practice of the organisation reflects the ambitions of the governance board. Boards also undertake duties specifically delegated to them through legislation.

Governance boards work in partnership with Principals and other leaders within their organisation. They also work closely with education officers and other partners to help their settings benefit from the advice and support of a range of voices.
